Officials investigate Sunday attack *UPDATE* posted Monday, October 22nd, 2012 @ 8:02 am  E-mail Story |  Print Story  Winnsboro police as well as the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police are investigating the attack and burning of a 20-year-old woman, but law enforcement officers acknowledged Monday they do not have any suspects in the case. However, Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said investigators have gathered evidence in the incident involving Sharmeka Moffitt of Winnsboro.   Cobb joined Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas as well as other law enforcement officials at a news conference Monday to discuss the incident. Moffitt is hospitalized in critical condition, according to Thomas. According to the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office, law enforcement officers responded to a call around 8 p.m. near the walking trail at Civitan Park to find Moffitt attacked and burned. She was taken to Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro and then transported to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. FBI spokesman Kyle Hanrahan in New Orleans said the bureau was aware of the incident and was investigating. He said at this time the bureau was assisting Louisiana State Police. News of the attack went viral Sunday evening on Facebook and many of the posts speculated the attack was a hate crime. Winnsboro chief Lester Thomas said at this time, the incident is not considered to be a hate crime. Social media reports stated Moffitt was attacked because she was wearing a President Barack Obama tee shirt. Thomas said those were rumors were unfounded and no such shirt was recovered.
