In the wilderness of Loftus Heights on Oct. 21, 1798, U.S. soldiers busied themselves constructing a fort along the Mississippi River, a fort which would soon guard what was then the southwestern corner of the United States.

Gen. James Wilkinson was in Natchez country with the army as the United States began to set up government in the newly-formed Mississippi Territory.
