Defensive fireworks highlight scrimmage

Although in recent seasons the Franklin Parish Patriots have developed a track record as a high-octane offense, it was the defensive unit that shined in the annual Blue and White spring scrimmage at Patriot Stadium on Monday.

Coach Barry Sebren said the Patriot roster has 78 players after the 10-practice spring session, and the scrimmage Monday allowed some of those players that may have been somewhat unnoticed to grab the coaches' attention.

"There were a few players that really surprised us out there, and there were also some that disappointed," Sebren said. "I think some of that has to do with when you split the talent up, your weaknesses get exposed because you're spread a little thin. But overall, I would have to say the defense dictated most of the scrimmage."

The Patriots, who averaged over 30 points and 400 yards per game on offense last year, have not been particularly as stunning on the defensive side of the ball in the past two seasons. After the play of the defensive backfield in particular on Monday, it appears that could change in 2012.

Senior Reco Beckwith should be the bell cow of the secondary with his blazing speed and large frame at the safety position. The 6'1, 205-pounder, who has been timed at 4.4 in the 40-yard-dash, had an interception in the scrimmage for the White Team.
