Medical center posts profits

The Franklin Parish Medical Center (FMC) received good news Friday that the hospital made a profit of more than $31,000 in January and saw a surplus in February.

Chief financial officer and acting chief executive Robert Boullion said in his financial report that the hospital posted a $31,235 profit for January 2008.

"Admissions dropped off somewhat in February, ending the month with 108, " said Boullion, "but the outpatient visits are up substantially and I think the numbers for March will reflect this upward trend in admissions and outpatient visits. "

Boullion reported an $8,000 profit for the month of February, largely due to employee benefit cost adjustments.

"We are also making progress with in-house collection efforts that we took back over in December, " said Boullion. "One of the things we have implemented is a software program that can verify insurance coverage immediately. "

The board voted Friday to approve a bid to repair some patient rooms at the hospital. Board members voted unanimously to begin repair and renovations to 10 patient rooms for the lowest submitted bid of approximately $2,000 per room.

"This price includes the removal of the existing wall covering in the rooms and bathrooms, painting, and the repair of any water damage to the plaster behind the wallpaper, " said project manager Dwaine Boothe.

FMC will soon extend rural healthcare to clinics in Crowville and Wisner. Plans are underway for two urgent care centers to be located on Hwy. 17 in Crowville and Hwy 15. in Wisner. The facilities will be for minor illnesses and injuries.

A tentative floor plan has been drawn up for the 2,700-square foot Crowville location and the Wisner site will is under review.

Blake Kramer, head of legal council, addressed the board with the new grievance and disciplinary policies for employees.

"The new grievance policy more clearly outlines the procedure an employee should take to resolve any issue of grievance, " said Kramer. "The policy simplifies the steps as it explains how a committee is set up for the board to address the problem and offer a solution. "

"The new policy will be included with each employee's paycheck and posted in the human resource department, " said board chairman Nick Poulos. "As a board, we feel like this is the best way to communicate this set of guidelines to the employees. "

CNO Sheila Mason stated in her report that the CMS committee members would be traveling to Baton Rouge to receive the Gold Award recently given to FMC and based on hospital improvement. FMC took the Bronze in 2007.

Plans are also underway for a crawfish boil for hospital employees for April 26. The event will be held in appreciation to the staff and their families and will also honor the physicians on doctor's day.
