Story Archives: Lady Patriots pick up win

Lady Patriots pick up win
by David Folse - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Double-digit hits, scoring every inning by one and committing only one error.

Can a coach really want anything more?

In one of their more complete performances on the young season, the Lady Patriot softball team picked up a key win over the Lady Rams of Bastrop on Thursday afternoon by a 12-1 score.

Kristyn Newman picked up the complete-game win in the circle for the Lady Patriots allowing only one run on five hits, striking out six and only walking two.

Pounding out 13 hits en route to the win, Franklin Parish scored one run in the first inning, one in the third, five in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth inning.

"It was one of our better hitting games of the year," Franklin Parish head coach Brian Gunter said. "This was a very important win for us in the district race. We take on Neville on Tuesday and host West Ouachita on Thursday of this week.

"Then we turn around and play Bastrop at home next Monday. So you could definitely say that this is a critical six-to-seven day period for our success this season."

Sporting a multitude of hitting stars, Kortnie Kelly had a single and drove in two runs, Kim Reynolds had a single and drove in a pair of runs, Mary-Kate Parker had three singles and double in addition to driving in three runs and Newman had a double and three runs driven in.

"That is really music to a coach's ears," Gunter said of the offensive explosion. As a coach you really cannot ask for anything more than that.

"We have been working extremely hard with these girls and we believe that many of them have the potential to be very good hitters down the line if not now. We had just been waiting for everyone in the lineup to put it all together in the same game and that finally happened against Bastrop."

Also able to take advantage of six Bastrop errors, Stephanie Beach had a pair of hits and scored three runs, Charlie Kate-Hodges had a pair of singles and Samantha Newsome had a pair of singles in addition to scoring a run and driving in a pair of runs.

"The win could best be defined as a pick-me-up victory for our team," Gunter said. "We had played well against Delhi Charter and Carroll to get back on the winning track but then we lose any momentum we may have had against Rayville in a loss.

"To this team's credit, we had two good days of practice and came back and it showed as we played much better against Bastrop. We put a total effort together and it definitely helped us to get back to where we want to be in this district. We are 3-2 and right back smack in the middle of the hunt in this very tough district for a spot in the 4A playoffs."
