KEDM needs help
Northeast Louisiana's only public radio station, KEDM, needs some help.
More to the point, it needs money.
$150,000 in private contributions, to be exact.
The money is needed for KEDM to secure a $105,000 grant from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB). The grant from CPB and the money raised locally by KEDM would pay for a $255,000-project to convert KEDM's broadcasting equipment to digital broadcasting.
Sometime ago, CPB strongly encouraged every public radio station in America to convert to digital broadcasting. The move by CPB came on the heels of the federal government mandating that television stations in the United States convert to digit broadcasting by February 2009.
KEDM is the last public radio station in Louisiana to make the move toward digital. It is imperative KEDM accomplish its goal, which must be met by the end of the year.
That's why KEDM needs the public to give generously to its cause.
While we suspect there exist individuals in the community who do not realize it, KEDM is an asset to all of northeast Louisiana and southern Arkansas.
Economic studies show the presence of pubic radio is a plus in the minds of the men and women who make the decisions on whether to invest—and create jobs—in a particular community. In the world of economic development experts, public radio is described as a quality of life concern.
Northeast Louisiana is no different.
Not only does KEDM provide first-class entertainment for the young and old alike, including top-notch news programs, the public radio station serves in a positive capacity as well in efforts to convince the business community abroad to invest in northeast Louisiana.
That is a fairly simplistic description of KEDM's role here.
It is an accurate one, though.
Recently, Susan Allain and Cynthia Perdue of KEDM called on individuals from throughout northeast Louisiana to serve on a committee in spearheading efforts to raise the $150,000 needed for KEDM to secure CPB's $105,000 grant.
Serving on the committee are Whitty Hood (chairman), Terry Baugh of West Monroe, Diane Cage of Monroe, Ronnie Darden of Columbia, John Denison of Monroe, former state Sen. Randy Ewing of Quitman, Stacey Goff of Monroe, Sam Hanna Jr. of Monroe, Jay Marx of Monroe, Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, Phillip McCready of Bastrop, Lisa Miller of Monroe, Byron Moore of Ruston, West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris, Dr. King Scott of West Monroe, John Schween of Monroe, Kathy Spurlock of Monroe, Jerome Vascocu of Rayville, Bill Walker of Winnsboro, Dr. Bob Webber of Monroe and Fred Westrom of Monroe.
Why did those individuals agree to give a helping hand in assisting KEDM's efforts to improve its broadcasting abilities?
They recognized the importance of KEDM improving its role in serving as a positive influence in the northeast Louisiana.
