Patriots take Bears in tourney

The Franklin Parish Patriots fell in their first two matches in the Mangham tournament, and in the end pulled out a nice win over the Block Bears.

The Mangham Dragons came out the winner of their tournament last week, as they played host to several area teams.

Franklin Parish Patriots coach Rick Berry said the team's first loss was close, 4-3, against Caldwell.

"Christian Eaton pitched well enough to win, but we didn't hit the ball well enough," Berry said.

Against Caldwell the Patriots got only three hits and batters struck out 13 times.

The second game for the Patriots saw a bigger gap in scoring, with LaSalle bringing in eight runs to Mangham's one. On the mound for Mangham were Corey Kenney and Zach Hughes.

It was in the third game that the Patriots came alive with a win over the Block Bears, 5-3. Jordan Temple was the winning pitcher, on the mound for six innings.

"He struck out 10 Block Bears and gave up only four hits," Berry said.

Berry said his boys finally showed their skills at bat against the Catahoula Parish team.

"We finally got the big hit when we needed it. Jonathon Eaton came up with a bases loaded triple in the sixth inning," Berry said.

In action this week, the Patriots traveled to Monterey on Monday and on Tuesday faced Delhi Charter at home.

The team is scheduled to play in the Rayville tournament on Thursday and Saturday.
