Cougars advance to state finals

The Franklin Academy Cougars made it to Tuesday's MPSA overall state finals by pushing hard last week against teams from Mississippi and Tennessee in Class A competition.

Coach Phil Jackson said the Cougars traveled 275 miles to Marks, Miss., on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for their first game against North Sunflower Academy.

"There were eight teams in the tournament in our class. We won the first game and got down to the semi-finals and lost that game," Jackson said.

The Patriots moved to a swift win, 75-61, over Sunflower, with senior Caleb Haring popping the net for 36 points. Darren Collie sank 20 points and Shelby Ziegler added 10.

Zigler was on his game with 14 rebounds.

In the second game the Patriots faced West Memphis Christian Academy and fell just short with a 79-72 loss.

"It was a tough one to lose," Jackson said. "They played a great game."

Haring led again with 37 points, followed by Nick Williams with 14 and Darren Collie adding 13.

The Cougars entered the consolation phase of the tournament facing the host school, Delta Academy.

The Cougars came away with the win, 76-63, earning them a berth in the overall state tourney.

Zigler was the lead scorer with 22 and was the top rebounder, grabbing 16. Haring added 18 points and Collie rounded out the high scorers with 12 points.

Looking toward Tuesday's game, which pitted the top MPSA teams against each other, regardless of class, for the state championship, Jackson predicted his team might not match up well against the largest school in the association, Madison-Ridgeland Academy of Madison, Miss.
