Princess Theatre to co-host Rayville event

On Friday, Jan. 25, the Rayville High Arts Center will be the setting for one of the most unusual concerts you may ever attend. The Juggernaut Jug Band from Louisville, Kent. will bring their jazzy jug band music to the area. The event is sponsored by several area arts venues including Princess Theatre, The Rayville High Arts Center, The Rose Theatre in Bastrop and The St. Joe Arts. These theatres along with others in North Louisiana have joined to form an arts consortia called RUPAR, Rural Underserved Presenters And Representatives. Gene Thompson, executive director of the Princess Theatre, said he is very excited about the event.

"This is the first time I can recall that weíve all combined to bring an event to the area," said Thompson. ìIt should be an incredible evening."

Band member Roscoe Goose, who plays washboard, trumpet, cans, blues harp, and snare, is quoted as saying, "Actually, it isn't only jazz, but also blues, ragtime, swing, and original music combined in a strange concoction called jug band music. Jug bands flourished in towns along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in the 1920's and '30's. Much as New Orleans spawned Dixieland Jazz, Louisville was the birthplace of jug music. Today, as then, a jug band is the ultimate party band. Band members include Goose, along with the Amazing Mr. Fish on walking bass, running nose flute and washtub bass, Skip Tracer on guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals, and Smiley Habanera on guitar.

Tickets are available at the Princess Theatre, The Rose in Bastrop, Rayville High School and The Northeast Louisiana Arts Council in West Monroe. Tickets prices are $20 for lower level seats and $10 for upper level. For tickets and information call the Princess Theatre at 435-6299.
