Bill McLemore has been the official rainfall keeper for Franklin Parish since 1985, and though it might have seemed like a dry season, according to McLemore's records, the official rainfall in total inches was less than 6 inches below the annual average.
McLemore, who keeps the weather information at the LSU AgCenter Sweet Potato Research Center and reports to the National Weather Service, logged 50.96 inches of rain for 2007.
The average rainfall, based on records dating from 1971 to 2000, is 56.54 inches – a deficit of 5.58 inches.
McLemore said 2007's totals didn't vary much from averages in years past, "You have some high years, you have some low years. I don't think it's that much difference."
Past rainfall averages include 45 inches in 2000, 67 inches in 2001, 57 inches in 2002, 52 inches in 2003, 73 inches in 2004, 44 inches in 2005 and about 57 inches in 2006.
2007's wettest month – which is normally one of the driest – was July with 11.45 inches. The lightest month was March with only .64 inches.
July's average is 3.44 inches and the March average is usually 5.92 inches.
Inch totals for the other months of 2007 include: January, 6.09; February, 2.11; April, 5.69; May, 5.1; June, 4.18; August, 1.82; September, 7.04, October 1.88, November 1.39 and December, 3.17.
