Franklin Parish came away from Vidalia High with a pair of wins to start the new year as the Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Vikings 50-45, while the Patriot boys defeated Vidalia 68-59.

The Lady Patriots, who lost to Vidalia in its final game of 2007 in the Sicily Island tournament, trail-ed the Lady Vikings for most of the contest and seemed to be in deeper trouble when two players fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Yolanda Harris hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 37-37 with 6:55 remaining.

Franklin Parish went up 41-40 on a basket by Jasmine Jones with 4:21 remaining.

Vidalia went back ahead, but a basket by Jasmine Whitley put the Lady Patriots up 46-45 with 1:15 remaining and Franklin Parish held on for the win.

Chasity Roberts led the Lady Patriots with 24 points, while Whitley added 13.

Vidalia was led by Rachael Wagoner with 15 points, while Tyshica Rodgers added 10.

Franklin Parish's boys used strong defensive play to take the early lead on the Vikings and increase that lead to 13 points in the thidr quarter.

"We forced a lot of turnovers, which was good because they are a good outside shooting team," said Franklin Parish coach Wystee Kerry. "We held them to two or three 3-point shots and played good overall defense."

J.C .Winn led the Patriots with 25 points, while Brandon Sims added 14.

Brandon Hawkins had 17 for Vidalia, while Gary Stewart added 10.

Franklin Parish tips off district play at home Tuesday against Bastrop before hosting Neville Friday.

"We wanted some good games going into district and these are two important

games," Kerry said. "We want to get out to a good start in district."
