Fire destroys abandoned school A fire left Wisner Elementary School and gym in ruins Saturday night, and local authorities are urging all nearby residents to stay clear of the scene as a safety precaution.
Firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene of the abandoned school located on the corner of Calhoun Road and School Street just before 10 p.m. Saturday to find the gym and most of the school already completely engulfed in flames.
Dozens of firefighters from every parish district battled the raging inferno throughout the night and into Sunday morning, but nothing was salvaged of the school which had been closed for over a decade.
"It's completely destroyed, it's gone," Wisner Fire Chief Doug Denmon said.
