Despite a brutal first half of the season filled with close calls and little to cheer about, the style in which the Franklin Academy Lady Cougars finished the 2012 schedule leaves much room for optimism on Loop Road.

The Lady Cougars outscored Union Christian, 19-4, in the second period and never relinquished the lead, earning their first victory of the year by a score of 44-42.

Although Franklin Academy only notched one victory in its first 14 games, it currently sits at an even 1-1 in district play after the win over Union on Dec. 18.

"It was a hard fought win for the girls," Franklin Academy coach Paul Work said. "It's been a long season, but they remain positive and play their hearts out. I'm really happy for them."
