Curtis, Evangel continue Class 2A dominance Anyone who watched the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's state championship game between John Curtis and Evangel Academy should have a good feel for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's Class 2A all-state team.
Curtis topped Evangel 35-13, and the two programs land a combined 12 players on the 2A team, including both the defensive and offensive MVPs.
Evangel senior quarterback Dakota Duron is the Offensive Most Valuable Player after leading the state in regular-season passing yards. Curtis senior linebacker Duke Riley, who was also the championship game MVP after returning a fumble 80 yards for the games first touchdown and recording 8.5 tackles, was named the Defensive MVP.
Springfield High coach Ryan Serpas, who led his team to a 11-2 record and first semifinal berth in school history, is the Coach of the Year. Springfield lost to Curtis in the semifinals.
Duron passed for 2,968 yards, completing 201 of 286 passes with 32 touchdowns in the regular season. Riley had 99 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, two sacks and one interception that he returned for a TD.
Curtis has five players on the all-state offense, including junior wide receiver Malachi Dupre, senior offensive linemen Anthony Taylor and Brandon Godfrey, and senior running back Sherman Badie.
Evangel adds senior wide receiver Trent Taylor, who was the Eagles' MVP in the championship game, senior offensive lineman Josh Thomas, and Duron is also on the offensive team.
Senior receiver Raheem Falkins from Carver, senior offensive lineman Wade Wheat from Springfield, junior offensive lineman Garrett Brumfield and sophomore running back Nick Brossette from University High, senior running back Jermaine Antoine from Loreauville, senior place kicker John Shelton from Winnfield, and sophomore athlete Jabiari Tyler from Isadore Newman round out the offense.
On defense, Curtis has four spots. Senior defensive linemen Fred Beauford and Cyle Cortez and defensive back Richard Allen join Riley on the team.
Other players on the defensive unit incude University senior defensive lineman Tim Williams, Winnfield senior defensive lineman Michael Patterson, Springfield senior linebacker Tanner Wild, Winnfield senior linebacker Trey Williams, Homer senior linebacker Demeatre Casey, Calvary senior defensive back Weston Steelhammer, Springfield senior defensive back Kimanae Claiborne, University sophomore defensive back Jarrod Franklin, Welsh punter Sean Leleux, and The Dunham School senior kick returner Harrison Domingue.
