Officials urge protection against mosquitoes

With more confirmed human cases of the West Nile virus reported throughout Louisiana this week, parish and state officials are urging residents to be smart and prepare properly when they are outdoors.

The Department of Health and Hospitals confirmed 39 new human cases of the mosquito-borne virus on Monday, marking 215 reported infections statewide of West Nile this year. There have also been 10 West Nile deaths reported thus far in 2012.

State officials said it is the highest number of cases in several years.
