The faces and songs of freedom at Grand Gulf camp, 1863 From Harrisonburg on the Ouachita to Grand Gulf on the Mississippi, blood was spilling in this region during the Civil War in the summer of 1863 as a massive Union force besieged Rebel forces at Vicksburg.
The countryside was in chaos, refugees fleeing west and civilians in a state of panic. At Grand Gulf, Union private Hosea Whitford Hood of Wisconsin was among the federal troops on picket duty.
