From Harrisonburg on the Ouachita to Grand Gulf on the Mississippi, blood was spilling in this region during the Civil War in the summer of 1863 as a massive Union force besieged Rebel forces at Vicksburg.

The countryside was in chaos, refugees fleeing west and civilians in a state of panic. At Grand Gulf, Union private Hosea Whitford Hood of Wisconsin was among the federal troops on picket duty.
