School Board joins lawsuit

The Franklin Parish School Board voted Tuesday night to join 34 other school districts and two major teachers unions in a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of Gov. Bobby Jindal's voucher program.

A petition filed by the Louisiana School Board Association (LSBA) in the 19th Judicial District Court seeks an injunction that would stop the recently passed legislation and declare it unconstitutional, but Superintendent Lanny Johnson said he has doubts that the measure will have much success in state court.

"The only thing that bothers me is that we've been paying public funds to parochial schools for 30 years or longer and if they file this in state court, I don't think they'd have much of a chance," Johnson said. He said he believed the federal court would be more likely to overturn the legislation and rule in favor of the school districts.
