Oakley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution reminds everyone each year that as we Americans celebrate the Fourth of July with hot dogs and fireworks, that we should also reflect on the high price the Revolutionary War patriots paid in giving birth to the United States of America.

Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 from Great Britain:

• Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in The Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships.
