The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office said Monday it is still piecing together the details of an alleged double-homicide that left two Winnsboro brothers dead.

OPSO deputies were called to 4541 Winnsboro Rd. in Monroe Friday night around 10 p.m. where they found 41-year-old Dexter Burkhalter and 38-year-old Russell Atkins deceased.

"We do have information that this was possibly a drug related crime," OPSO Major Jason Pleasant said. "Right now we are investigating it as a double-homicide."

Pleasant said that investigators are still ironing out what occurred at Atkins' south Monroe residence and would not specify how the two men died, citing the investigation as still ongoing.

"We are continuing to talk to witnesses and process the crime scene," Pleasant said.

Pleasant said both bodies were taken to Little Rock for autopsies to determine an accurate time of death.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call OPSO at 329-1216.
