Johnston signs scholarship, makes history

Franklin Parish senior Katie Johnston made history last week, becoming the first player to ever sign a scholarship from the Lady Patriots' softball program.

The talented right-handed pitcher will take her talents to Goodman, Miss. after signing a letter of intention to play for Holmes Community College last Thursday among family, friends and coaches at FPHS.

Signing day was bittersweet for the Johnston family, who lost Katie's brother, Mathew, to cancer in 2006. Mathew, an honor student and decorated athlete at FPHS, was on a baseball scholarship at Tulane University when he lost his battle to the illness.

"He was the first person I thought about after I signed," Katie Johnston said. "I know he would have been very proud."
