Elizabeth Roach was a pioneer in education in this region of the country long before most of the populace could read or write.

In 1818, she donated grounds and buildings at Washington, Miss., (near Natchez in Adams County) to the Mississippi Methodist Conference.

Then that group and others worked with the Mississippi Legislature to set an administrative structure and charter for a school for women at a time when nearby Jefferson College was still in its infancy.
