In March of 1833, John Quitman accidentally shot himself in the leg. But the pain would pale in comparison to what happened weeks later when two of his sons -- Edward and John -- died of cholera within 48 hours of one another.

The shooting accident occurred in a bayou near New Orleans where Quitman, in a boat, drew his loaded pistol to shoot wildlife when the bullet accidentally discharged hitting him in his calf and instep. Doctors in the area couldn't extract the bullet, so Quitman, age 35, returned to Natchez, a place the New York native had called home since 1821. He had become a successful lawyer and politician. He was considered the most popular man in Adams County.
