After a brutal opening stretch of the season, the Franklin Parish Patriots claimed their first win of the season over the weekend – a 5-2 victory over Jena at the Rayville High School Tournament.

Going into the tournament slate on Saturday, the Patriots had already lost their first seven games of the year, before Caldwell handed them a 12-6 defeat that morning.

After the loss to Caldwell, Franklin Parish coach Lynn Middleton knew it was make or break time for his young squad. With Jena on deck, Middleton pulled his team together for a talk.

"I told them after the Caldwell game that they had to commit to doing everything right," Middleton said. "I told them that if they did, we would win. If they didn't, then we would continue to lose."

The Patriots responded with a great performance against Jena, led by the guiding arm of senior Mason Lyles. The co-captain hurled a complete-game performance, giving up two only two hits and pilling up nine strikeouts along the way.
