After the Franklin Parish Lady Patriot's performance last weekend, coach Richie Kelly sent a mass text message to the team members that was short and sweet: "Phenomenal"

Franklin Parish (3-2) won two of its three games in the area's annual tournament that signifies the kickoff of softball season – the Polar Bear Classic.

Forty-five junior high and high school softball teams were in action over the weekend at ULM, the Saul Adler Sports Complex and at Monroe area high schools. The event, which is held every February, is organized by Neville head coach Jeff Tannehill .

"When you consider the pressure they had to play under, their performance was just over the top," Kelly said.

The tournament was an excellent early measuring stick for Kelly to gage where his Lady Patriots stand as they embark on the 30-plus game season. All three teams Franklin Parish played at the tournament were in postseason play of their respected classifications in 2011.
