Cougars taming adversity

Franklin Academy coach Paul Work is optimistic about the current season and the future of the Cougars hardwood squad and it's easy to see why.

The Cougars are currently undefeated in district play in both varsity and JV teams with the meat of the schedule coming up over the next month.

The varsity team claims a 11-3 overall record, while the JV is 8-5. Only one senior, John Ross Newman, is on the varsity roster, and five players from the JV team will be acceding to varsity next season.

The varsity team is coming off another strong week on the court, winning two out of its three games. After traveling to Union Christian last Tuesday and delivering a smothering 72-37 victory, the Cougars ran into some free throw trouble against River Oaks on Thursday that cost them the contest according to Work. The Cougars lost in overtime, 59-55.

"We had our chances to win, but our free throw struggles cost us in that one," Work said. "We fought hard though. We trailed by 17 at one point and the guys just wouldn't give up. You have to give them (River Oaks) credit too though. They (River Oaks) shot the lights out from three point range."
