'Tis the season for scam artists

With the New Year right around the corner, the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office hopes educating the public on an ongoing problem will decrease the rising number of scam victims.

Over the past five years, FPSO has seen an increasing number of complaints relating to scams solicited through the telephone, mail and Internet, according to Chief Deputy Kevin Cobb.

Cobb feels the only way to slow down the phenomena is by each person in the community doing their part to pass along the word: If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

During the past two years, FPSO has seen victim losses ranging from $200 to $30,000 and every amount in between. One frustrating aspect of these types of crimes is, more often than not, local law enforcement officials are powerless to stop it.
