A Gilbert native is approaching the end of a three-year assignment as battalion commander of LSU's ROTC program.

Lt. Col. John Wright will relinquish his duties in July after a 36-month stint of what he called a "dream job."

In 2009, Wright was selected by an administrative board over a lengthy list of candidates. The board reviews the candidate's service records, letters of recommendations and college transcripts before selecting the next commander of the ROTC program's cadets. A candidate must hold a master's degree and is typically selected by his or her order of merit.

Wright was the top choice.
