Premiums rise as fire rating drops

The town of Wisner could be facing a four alarm emergency if the fire department can't secure enough volunteers to meet the criteria for a fire rating.

After an evaluation of the department's operations by Property Insurance of Louisiana (PIAL) on Aug. 3, town officials were notified that the district failed to meet the minimum criteria for a rating better than Class 10.

Specifically, the department did not meet training requirements of its staff as related to structural fire suppression. A Class 10 rating indicates the district has "no recognized fire protection," according to PIAL's Web site.

Randall Loe, PIAL field representative supervisor, notified Wisner Fire Chief Doug Denmon of his findings in a letter dated Aug. 5.
