Commissioner discusses loss of Internet grant
by Katie Norwood - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell said on Thursday that his office would continue the probe into the state's loss of an $80-million federal grant that would have provided high speed Internet to 21 rural parishes in northeast Louisiana, including Franklin.

Campbell addressed the issue at a meeting held at the Franklin Parish Courthouse in Winnsboro last Thursday.

The grant, awarded in 2010 through Obama's Reinvestment and Recovery Act, would have provided for 900 miles of fiber optic cable that would stretch broadband from Cameron to East Carroll Parish.

"There were 230 grants awarded to help rural and underserved areas and only one was rescinded, and that was this one," Campbell said. "It's unbelievable. This is a real blow for the people in the Mississippi Delta."
