Parish farmers in high cotton High cotton prices are causing an uptick in production in Franklin Parish, according to the LSU AgCenter.
The AgCenter reports that around 21,595 acres of cotton were grown in the parish this season, up from 13,126 acres in 2010.
Cotton acreage in Franklin Parish had fallen to about 12,000 acres in 2009, roughly half of what was grown in the previous year. Cotton was selling for about $1.09 per pound on the International Exchange late last week.
"I can only assume that the increase in cotton grown has to do with the high price. Prices are higher than they have been in a number of years," said Carol Pinnell-Alison, Franklin Parish's county agent. For the full story, subscribe to the The Franklin Sun's NEW E-Edition! |
