Story Archives: Corn yields better than expected

Corn yields better than expected
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Corn did well in Franklin Parish this season, despite worries that drought would result in low yields, according to farmers and agriculture officials.

Information from the LSU AgCenter lists Franklin Parish as second in the state for corn acreage, with 81,659 acres grown this season.

In 2010, there were 74,000 acres of corn grown in the parish.
Farmers might have needed rain earlier in the season, but now they would like weather to remain clear so they can finish bringing crops in from fields, said Carol Pinnell-Alison, Franklin Parish's county agent.

"I think it's going really well and they are pretty much wrapping it up. Things will be alright, as long as the weather holds out," she said.
