May the farce be with you...

"So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause." — Princess Padmé in "Star Wars III: The Revenge of the Sith".

While it might register pretty high on the geek-meter to start this column with a "Star Wars" quote, I don't feel too bad after Sen. John McCain's "Lord of the Rings" reference—tea partiers as hobbits—on the floor of the U.S. Senate last week.

The prophetic utterance of Princess Padmé, portrayed by Natalie Portman, was brought to my mind after watching President Barrack Obama's speech at the National Council of La Raza's (NCLR) conference last week.

Speaking to Latino voters about immigration reform, the president said, "I know some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own."

That statement was met with thunderous applause, followed by a chant of "Yes, you can!" from the crowd.

Pretty scary stuff, for those of us who still see the presidency as an equal branch of our government's three-tier system and our country as a nation of laws, not men.
