With the economy continuing to decline, reports of property theft have constantly been on the rise according to authorities.

According to officials with the Winnsboro Police Department and the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office, felony and misdemeanor theft charges have increased significantly in the past year.

"We have made several arrests in the parish for property thefts," said FPSO Chief Deputy Kevin Cobb. "Because of the demand for scrap metal, these individuals are looking for anything they could turn into quick cash at the scrap yard."

Cobb said many of the recent charges filed at the FPSO are misdemeanors, though most are felonies.
