Crowville man counts down historic shuttle launch

Charlie Amos of Crowville will always remember the day before his tenth birthday when a national tragedy sparked a life-long dream to see a space shuttle launch.

Amos, who is now 35 and a high school teacher, was a student traveling to elementary school on Jan. 28, 1986, when his bus driver gave him the news that the Space Shuttle Challenger had exploded in the Florida sky during its ascent.

"As a second-grader, it was hard to believe something like that could really happen," said Amos. "I've been interested in the space program ever since."
