Board to trim budget with staff reduction

School districts across the state are facing financial woes in the coming year and Franklin Parish is no exception. To keep the system operating within the budget, a reduction in staff will be necessary for the upcoming school year, according to officials.

"Since salaries are 85 percent of our budget, it's the only way we can really save money," said Superintendent Lanny Johnson. "We will run somewhat of a deficit this year, but if we can cut the budget, we can operate efficiently over the new few years."

Johnson said the deficit was largely attributed to the increase in employer contributions to employee retirement plans. Employer contributions increased from 15 percent to 25 percent in the past year, an addition that many school districts are struggling to overcome.
