Drought ignites fire hazard concerns

If you are thinking of shooting off extra fireworks left over from Independence Day celebrations, you might want to think again.

While fireworks are exempt from the statewide burn ban, Franklin Parish officials warn that people who set blazes with fireworks could be held liable for the cost of putting fires out.

The burn ban issued June 1 by State Fire Marshall H. Butch Browning and Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain is still in effect and will remain in effect as long as the drought persists, officials say.

"Fireworks are exempt from the burn ban," said Fire District 2 Chief Allen Dupuy. "Whether they will be permitted during the burn ban is left for local governments to determine."
