Story Archives: Shelter animals get new leash on life

Shelter animals get new leash on life
by Katie Norwood - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The newly established Winnsboro Humane Facility (WHF) opened house to a gracious crowd Saturday, June 4.

Guests enjoyed horseback rides, a super slide, hotdogs, popcorn and snow cones, along with "Tito" who performed dog tricks throughout the day.

Five animals housed at the facility were adopted Saturday during the open house. Four dogs and one cat left the shelter that day with a new family and a new lease on life.

The open house also served as a fundraiser for the costs associated with fostering dogs formerly housed at the shelter.

After an animal is picked up by the humane officer and taken to the WHF, the animal has seven days to be claimed or adopted before it is taken to the shelter in Ouachita Parish and immediately euthanized, according to sources.

In an effort to save these animals from an untimely death, several parish residents foster and care for the dogs until they can be adopted into permanent homes, which can be a costly undertaking.
