Duck weed or salvinia? Know your water flora

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries officials admit the battle against giant salvinia on Turkey Creek Lake might never truly be won, but say it's not as bad as some think.

The problem is that much of what people mistake as giant salvinia on the lake is actually other vegetation, Ryan Daniel, a LDWF fisheries biologist, told members of the Franklin Parish Police Jury during Thursday's regular meeting.

"It's back, but it's not really that bad," he said. "People are saying it's back as bad as it was before, but a lot of them are mistaking duckweed and water hyacinth for giant salvinia."
It's important for people to know the difference, officials said.
