Feral hogs have been a thorn in the side of Franklin Parish farmers and sportsmen for a long time, but a new law gives hunters an advantage in dealing with the pests.

House Bill 294, signed into law last week during the legislature's regular session, expands the state Wildlife and Fisheries Commission's authority on rules regulating the hunting or trapping of wild hogs. Hogs can now be hunted at night without a limit, using any caliber legal firearm.

Sen. Neil Riser, R-Columbia, handled the bill, which was crafted in the House by Rep. Major Thibaut, D-New Roads.
