Statewide burn ban ordered

A statewide burn ban has been ordered as the state swelters under months of prolonged drought.

The ban on all private burning was issued last Wednesday by State Fire Marshall H. Butch Browning and Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain.

The ban will continue until further notice, but farmers will still be allowed using fire as a method to clear fields, according to the Fire Marshal's Office.

While Browning has announced that allowing other prescribed burns would be left to the discretion of local fire departments, Franklin Parish Fire Chief Truman Welch said Franklin Parish residents shouldn't waste their time by asking.
