A student from Gilbert Junior High is this year's parish winner for the Drug Abuse Resistance (DARE) Essay Contest.

The announcement was made by Chief Deputy Kevin Cobb of the Franklin Parish Sheriff's Office.

"This year's winner in the DARE Essay Contest is Crystal Mathews, daughter of Clara and John Mathews of Wisner," Cobb said.

In recognition of the honor, Crystal was presented a pin and a DARE travel bag.

The winning essay was chosen following the completion of the DARE Corp Program for the 2010-11 school year.

During the year, fifth grade students from throughout Franklin Parish were involved in DARE classes taught by Deputy Marcy Thompson, DARE officer.
