Story Archives: Bell making comeback for Patriots

Bell making comeback for Patriots
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
With the stands filled to capacity and an unexpected, undefeated Patriots team on the field against the powerhouse Bastrop Rams the night of Oct. 8, 2010, Winnsboro was buzzing with excitement.

As the Patriots received the opening kickoff, running back Lonnie Bell fielded the ball and headed up field.

What happened next would forever impact the career of Bell and the 2010 season of Franklin Parish High School.

Bell was taken down hard to the ground by Bastrop defenders and was noticeably shaken when he returned to the sideline.

Head coach Barry Sebren still keeps a photo he received from that hit.

"He limped off the field," Sebren recalled. "We thought he would be OK. We thought he could go in the second half. He passed some of the tests on the sideline at halftime."

Bell reentered the game on the opening possession of the second half.

The Patriots ran a pitch out to Bell who took the ball and tried to cut around the end of the line.
