Franklin Parish honors its 'fallen heroes'

Residents of Franklin Parish paused Monday to reflect on the fallen at a Memorial Day program held at the Lowentritt Pavilion at Davis Park.

Winnsboro Mayor Jackie Johnson opened the ceremonies sponsored by American Legion Post 84 with a welcome that paid tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Americans' freedoms.

"We are gathered here today to commemorate the fine men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces. Today is a day of celebration.

Today is a day of reflection and today is a day of sadness," Johnson said.

The event included the dedication of bricks at the park bearing the names of veterans and reading the names of soldiers and sailors from Franklin Parish who have been killed in action.

Carolyn Thomas led the crowd in singing patriotic songs.
