Story Archives: VA scaleback could send vets to Franklin

VA scaleback could send vets to Franklin

The Veterans Affairs Office in Richland Parish is one of 22 veteran's service offices headed for the chopping block if budget revisions passed last week by the House Appropriations Committee make it through the Louisiana Legislature.

The cuts would remove $932,124 from the VA's state general fund and mean shutting the offices, which service about 30,734 veterans across Louisiana, according to VA officials.
"It would mean that veterans from Richland Parish would have to drive to either Winnsboro or Monroe to get help.

It's unfortunate, because many veterans are elderly and some can't afford to drive the extra miles. This would impact a group that is least able to deal with cuts like this," said Bobby Collins, a VA counselor for Franklin and Richland Parishes.
