Story Archives: Wheat farmers harvesting fields of gold

Wheat farmers harvesting fields of gold
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
A bumper crop combined with high prices are adding up to make this a very good year for wheat farmers in Franklin Parish.

Wheat harvest in the parish is reportedly coming in at 70 to 100 bushels per-acre, far above what was produced over the last few seasons, said Carol Pinnell-Alison, the LSU AgCenter's county agent for Franklin Parish.

What makes the news even better is that there is more wheat being grown in Franklin Parish this year and wheat is going for as much as much $8 per-bushel at market.

"It's coming in a lot better than normal and the crop is looking really good. We are looking at a tremendous crop as compared to last year," said Pinnell-Alison.
