Parish safe from backwater, officials say

Officials are breathing a sigh of relief that Franklin Parish has apparently dodged the bullet of backwater flooding that is threatening other parts of Louisiana.

The Morganza Spillway, north of Baton Rouge, was opened by the Army Corps of Engineers over the weekend for the first time in four decades to take pressure off levee systems containing the rising waters of the Mississippi River.

As late as Friday, Franklin Parish Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness director Mitch Reynolds was warning local officials to brace for flooding.

The opening of the Morganza Spillway could have been the "trigger" for flood water in the parish that could impact as many as 200 people, he said.
