Story Archives: Franklin Parish's untapped resource

Franklin Parish's untapped resource
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Gulf parishes can boast about their abundance in oil and seafood resources, but Franklin Parish has wellsprings of wisdom that should be tapped in these uncertain times—our senior citizens.

With people in Franklin Parish anxiously watching the rising Mississippi River, I recently did some mining of my own of this valuable resource by talking to some of this parish's older residents who remember the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927.

Those interviews can be read in a story that appears on this website.

Those of us in the Bayou State are no strangers to disasters, natural or otherwise.

Two that come to mind right away are, of course, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the oil spill that was gushing in the Gulf of Mexico this time last year.

Disasters, which are bad enough without any help, always seem to be aggravated by a good dose of misinformation and apocalyptic prediction.

It's when these things get out of hand that older folks prove a treasure trove of common sense and measured response to help see us through.

Luckily, Franklin Parish tops the list of Louisiana Parishes with older populations, so they aren't too hard to find when you need one.
