'King Cotton' making noble comeback

Cotton prices soaring to all-time highs has given needed boost to production in Franklin Parish, according to reports from the LSU AgCenter.


Cotton, which was selling at less than 80 cents per pound on the International Exchange a year ago, peaked at more than $2.10 a pound in March. Prices were at $1.70 per-pound late last week.

The AgCenter reports that production in Franklin Parish, which has dropped of dramatically in recent years, rebounded some in 2010.


About 12,000 acres of cotton were grown in Franklin Parish in 2009, which was about half as much grown in 2008. Cotton production was up in 2010, with 13,126 acres harvested.
