Winnsboro Mayor Jack Hammons didn't live to see the completion of the new community center that he worked so hard to create, but his spirit was present as doors opened Wednesday, April 6, at the building named in his honor.

"Every time we look around our community, whether it's the Catfish Festival or this community center, we see Mr. Jack's spirit all over this community," said Gene Thompson, speaking from the podium at a dedication of the Jack Hammons Community Center.

Thompson, a friend of Hammons who considers the late mayor family, said he would have been proud of the community center project that he started three years ago.

The 7,500 square-foot Jack Hammons Community Center that he helped build includes two conference rooms, a warming kitchen and a 4-foot by 5-foot projection screen.
