Story Archives: Mother Nature not always nice to farmers

Mother Nature not always nice to farmers
by Tom Bonnette - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Corn producers need water for crops, but there can be too much of a good thing.

Mother Nature, which has dumped heavy precipitation on Franklin Parish over the last week, should ease up some so farmers can get their seed in the ground, said Carol Pinnell-Alison, the LSU AgCenter's county agent for Franklin Parish.

"It's been raining on our recommended planting dates and some that planted early are looking at replanting now, because the rain has caused the soil to become so packed down," she said.

The AgCenter recommends that corn farmers plant from March 15 to April 1.

For many farmers, who had to deal with drought last year, it would be better if the rain would come a little later in the season to help save money that they were forced to dole out last year to irrigate fields, said Pinnell-Alison.
